SDAIE strategies are a way to bridge a gap between the English Language Learner and the content being taught. These allow for a student to not feel intimidated by the material, but easily interpreted and understood by the EL. The use of the Open Mind Diagram in the classroom assists the EL to learn the material in such a way. Not only the EL, but every student as well.
What is an Open Mind Diagram? This SDAIE strategy has the students break up into four small groups. Each group will receive a piece of poster paper to write on. Within each of those groups, each student will get a different colored marker to help distinguish the work student did on the poster. The students will form the shape of a head on the paper and write inside the head. The information that they will be using to form the head will be words from the story, quotes, or questions they may have. The use of pictures is encourage for the EL in CELDT levels 1 & 2
Purposes/Benefits of the Open Minded Diagram This SDAIE strategy allows for the students to think about the story that he or she just read and come up with ideas to portray what they learned from it. This does not only have to be use within the Language Arts portion of the day, but in any subject. This benefits the English Language Learner work with a group of students to help him or her out. This strategy shows the teacher what each student contributed to the group because of the colored marker the student uses.

When to use Open Mind Diagram * This is to be used during cooperative learning for the students to be working in groups * To prepare for a test, a project, or to organize data This strategy can be used for all CELDT levels
While this activity is going on in the classroom, the teacher is encouraged to be engaged in the student groups by walking around the classroom to assist in any way that he or she is needed. This also creates a classroom environment that is comfortable and welcoming for all students. Video:
